Beginners Level courses

Japanese 9, Japanese 10 and Beginners Japanese 11 enable students to develop basic communication and an understanding of Japanese culture. After successful completion of these courses, students will be able to:
  • ​carry on basic, practical conversations about themselves, school life, families, friends and weather 
  • read and write HIRAGANA (Japanese alphabet characters) 
  • recognize some KANJI
  • have a basic cultural understanding of Japan

Japanese 11

Japanese 11 is an intermediate level course which enables students to practice further and master what they have learned in the Beginners level. They will also develop a certain proficiency to prepare for Japanese 12. The learning outcomes will allow them to:
  • discuss in Japanese such topics as  daily life, shopping, dining  out, leisure, sports, fashion and health
  • read and write KATAKANA (second set of written symbols)
  • recognize approximately 50 KANJI ​
  • have a further understanding of the history and traditions of Japan

Japanese 12

Japanese 12 is an advanced program that will allow students to master and build on what they have learned in the previous Japanese courses. Upon successful completion of the course they will be able to:
  • with some spontaneity, converse on topics of study
  • in writing, convey information on familiar topics using HIRAGANA, KATAKANA and about 150 - 200 KANJI characters.
​In addition, to familiarize themselves with various cultural aspects of Japan, students will participate in activities such as origami, calligraphy, cooking and tea ceremony. Also, anime and manga can be used for cultural and language studies. Therefore, active class participation, group work and role-playing are an important part of the course.
